Depeche Mode

By Amanda

This evening, Depeche Mode was once again shut out of the Grammys. Every time the band is nominated for an industry award, it comes with mixed feelings for fans. Part joy for the possibility they might actually be getting recognized for their amazing work, and part skepticism for the fact they rarely get the respect they deserve from the music industry. They were part of a formative period in the life of electronic music and have inspired a generation of musicians spanning multiple genres. They’ve sold nearly 100 million albums worldwide. Their recent tours are playing to more people than any time in their career. They’ve built an army of a following that gives The Greatful Dead a run for their money. And yet, only a handful of outlets have recognized their achievements over a 30 year career.

Album after album, Fletch’s assessment that Depeche Mode are “the biggest underground band in the world” still rings true. Fans constantly field comments from friends and family who think of Depeche Mode as “some 80s band” or in most cases, don’t claim to know who they are. Some press outlets buy the cheapest Getty images they can get or have on hand, dating back to the early 80s without a care that those photos are completely irrelevant to an article written 25 years later. Depeche Mode Grammy Award Shut Out Once Again

January 31, 2010

…and the Grammy goes to… not to Depeche Mode once again… oh well.

Phoenix’s ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’, won the Grammy for ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ during the pre-telecast portion of the awards in Los Angeles. Phoenix was nominated alongside David Byrne and Brian Eno’s ‘Everything That Happens Will Happen Today’, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s ‘It’s Blitz!’ Death Cab for Cutie’s ‘The Open Door’ and Depeche Mode’s ‘Sounds Of The Universe’.

Also, Depeche Mode’s Grammy award nomination in the ‘Best Short Form Music Video’ category for ‘Wrong’ falls short to Black Eyed Peas for ‘Boom Boom Pow’.

Three times in the past Depeche Mode received Grammy nominations and won none. The first Grammy award nomination came in 1995 for ‘Devotional’ in the ‘Best Long Form Music Video’ category. The second nomination came in 2002 for ‘I Feel Loved’ in the ‘Best Dance Recording’ category. In December 2006, Depeche Mode were nominated a third time for a Grammy award in the ‘Best Dance Recording’ category once again, for ‘Suffer Well’.

Depeche Mode Nominated For Echo Awards 2010

January 28, 2010

Depeche Mode have been nominated for the ECHO 2010 in the “International Rock/Pop Group” category and they compete against A-Ha, Black Eyed Peas, Razorlight and U2.

Other international artists up for ECHO awards include Bruce Springsteen, David Guetta, Mark Knopfler and Robbie Williams, who are all nominated in the male “International Rock/Pop Artist” category. Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston and Pink will be vying for honors in the “International Rock/Pop Female” category.

This year’s ECHO Awards returns to it’s 2007 home of the Berlin Fairground following last year’s event at Berlin’s O2 World Arena, which took place in front of an audience of 10,000 and was criticized for poor organization.

The 2010 awards show will be held on March 4th, 2010 and is produced by Berlin-based production company MME and will be hosted by Sabine Heinrich and Matthias Opdenhöve. The advanced sale of about 1,000 tickets for the show starts on 5 February 2010.
